In September 1990, the American Medical Association (AMA) co-sponsored a national conference on “Quackery, Health Fraud, and Misinformation: A Pandora’s Box,” one in a series of such conferences that often included representation from the federal Food and Drug Administration. Despite the lack of meaningful traditional treatment for HIV/AIDS, the federal government and major medical organizations seemed to use these conferences to conflate “quackery” with potentially beneficial alternative treatments.
